On this issue, I believe we should follow the same "State of Sentience" timeline that Family Law follows when determining child custody.
- Up until age 12, children cannot dictate their preferred pronouns to teachers without parental consent.
- At age 12, a child can have a say in their preferred pronouns, but the parents need to be made aware of the child's request. Teachers already have too much on their plate to be responsible or liable for the psychological dynamics of this issue, so should there be an expressed concern of harm or anguish, the school will consult the expertise of a psychologist to assess the situation and dictate the best course of action.
- At age 16, a child can have full sentience over their preferred pronouns without requiring parental consent
