The issue of transgender girls participating in school sports is a quagmire of discrimination and misogyny sandwiched between anger and ignorance designed by Danielle Smith to ignite a very hot and controversial topic that effects a very small minority in order to distract us from more practical issues that effect the larger majority - like overcrowded classrooms, an underfunded school system and a botched curriculum.
Let me be clear - I am not minimizing this issue for those whom it is effecting. I am so disgusted that our premier is doing this to you and I cannot stress enough how truly offensive I think this policy is.
What I would like to know is why only transgender girls are being scrutinized? Is it just assumed that a transgender boy couldn't possibly add an unfair winning advantage to a boys team? After all, teenage girls typically experience growth spurts much sooner than boys so a 5'9" transgender boy would be a great middle blocker on a boys volleyball team, or a deadly centre on a boys basketball team - don't you think? Guess what Danielle Smith - girls play sports too - AND THEY'RE REALLY GOOD AT THEM! It just astounds me that even boys who identify as girls are STILL considered better athletes than girls! We just can't catch a break! Not even from a FEMALE premier! This policy doesn't just show profound disrespect to transgender girls - it shows profound disrespect to ALL girls! So if you're going to make stupid policies, Danielle Smith - go stupid all the way and make everyone in school sports prove their gender - you know - just to be fair!
Also, this policy shows a complete lack of understanding of what school sports are SUPPOSED to be about. The indelible life lessons of school sports are supposed to be about how to work together as a team, build friendships, nurture skills and foster good sportsmanship. Every team has their assets and liabilities and good teamwork balances those two out! Having "the best player" on your team doesn't guarantee you'll win (the Oilers are proof positive of that!). Trusting in your teammates, respecting their efforts, celebrating their highs, supporting their lows, and calling them out when they're not being a good teammate - THIS is what school sports are SUPPOSED to be about!
School is a place where children acquire the tools they need to succeed in life. School sports teach children how to work together as a team, build friendships, nurture skills and foster good sportsmanship - these are tools for success. Policies designed to violate, embarrass and discriminate, incite division, and ignite controversy from both the left and right solely to distract everyone from looking at more practical and pressing issues - these are the tools of the UCP!
